The AusCycling National Road Series (NRS) returned with an action-packed nine-day series held in the Tweed Region of northern New South Wales from November 28 – December 6.

One hundred riders from 21 men’s and women’s teams contested a series of 6 road races, one ITT, one TTT and a crit.

An even competition saw five different women winners and six different men.

Brendan Johnston (CCS Canberra) resisted the pressure of bigger teams, better climbers and better sprinters to haul himself to an individual National Road Series victory over the nine days of competition in and around the Tweed Valley.

While Sarah Gigante (Tibco-Silicon Valley Bank) showed her superstar status to stand top of the podium in the women’s individual in what were stifling conditions.

Due to a racing incident at, approximately, the 12.5km of the race (around 7:30am) several riders required initial medical assessment. These assessments led to a requirement for multiple ambulance support. The onsite race medical support personnel were used for initial triage and the race was immediately neutralised. It was then decided to stop the race to allow the medical staff to attend to those involved in the accident.

As this Road Race was a, multi-lap, short 13.9km circuit race racing was not able to be re-started until the road was cleared. With the road not opening until around 9:45am and a number of teams not continuing, the race was abandoned.

We wish those riders who were injured a speedy recovery.
